Simon Evans - Founder of LittleBig Bikes
Hi, I’m Simon, dad to two kids, round-the-world cyclist, mountain biker and founder of LittleBig Bikes.
As you may have guessed, I love bikes. What started with the usual childhood races around my neighbourhood eventually led to an 18-month adventure around the world on two wheels.
In 2010, my best mate Fearghal and I completed Revolution Cycle, the first Irish circumnavigation of the globe by bicycle. We cycled 30,000km through some of the highest, driest, remotest, wettest and hottest places on earth. It cemented my love of bikes and the freedom they give us to travel, explore and simply get outside.
My other background is in structural engineering, where I was lucky enough to work on everything from restoring ancient buildings to designing modern structures. That combination of bikes and design eventually led to LittleBig.
After returning from my world cycle, I worked in a bike shop and saw how quickly kids outgrew conventional balance bikes and pedal bikes. I started wondering: why not design one bike that could grow with the child?
A growing frame would mean one bike could fit for longer, so it could be built with higher-quality components and ride better, while saving parents from having to replace bikes as their child grows. One bike lasting longer also means fewer bikes need to be made and fewer materials used.
That simple idea became the LittleBig: one bike designed to grow with your child from balance bike to pedal bike, so they can learn to balance and then pedal independently on the same familiar bike.

At LittleBig bikes, one of our main aims is to make kids bikes more sustainable through simple yet considered design, the reduction of material waste and (with no need for stabilisers) and the assurance of a long product life.

LittleBig’s unique 3-in-1 design means it adapts with your growing child. There is no need to switch bikes to change bike size. No more excess discards.
Long lasting parts and materials
The LittleBig uses a rust proof aluminium frame and fork that is fitted with strong, well built parts that will last and work effectively for longer than normal.
We have selected high quality components like those you would find on an adult’s bike. In the unlikely event that you should break a part (accidents do happen) then these can be repaired or replaced at your local bike shop.
We’ve known some LittleBig bikes that have been passed down to 4 different kids and still going!
Minimising and reducing packaging
Because we assemble every LittleBig here in Ireland, we can fit more component parts into each shipping container than if the bikes arrived fully assembled.
As well as looking to reduce the cardboard and plastic packing, we re-use as much as possible. We are constantly looking for ways to give a second life to our packaging. For example, the frame, wheel and saddle cartons are used by others for moving home, office storage or no-dig gardening. When we received a few cracked timber pallets, they were re-made into the frame of a greenhouse for growing veggies!
